Subject: Reneka Techno

Reneka has announced that they will discontinue the Techno in the very near future, a few
dozen will be manufactured still, but after that it is curtains closed.

I am a bit sad about it, I had hoped that Reneka was willing to take the Techno evolution to
the next step, but the reality is that the market of mainly home users in the last couple of
years didn't warrant further investment, just too small for a commercial machine manufacturer
like Reneka.

Anyway, it was certainly fun being involved with the Techno for as long as it lasted,
although it will be good to catch up with alt.coffee a bit with some more time available and
just as a person enjoying espresso as opposed to a Techno vendor.

It is a fact that alt.coffee participants of the early years got the Techno going as machine
available for home use, Forgive me if I am wrong, but I think only David R is still posting,
but it was his involvement with Ian Bersten that set things in motion for me at the time. And
the alties who decided to be the early adopters.

Fast forward six years later and soon it will be the end of an era. Nothing lasts
forever.....

Hi René,

Well I'm sure there are several things going on. For one, there have been a
number of other dual boiler machines introduced, aimed at the high end home
user. The market for such equipment is only so big, and once it gets
fragmented it isn't very big at all for any one producer. Another issue is
that a disproportionate amount of the market for this sort of stuff comes
from the USA, and with the US dollar being worth about 4 double ply sheets
of toilet paper right now, it is hard to manufacture stuff for that market
at prices people are willing to pay.

Maybe you can find something else to sell us?

Yes, I think you are quite right in general. The Techno was never intended to be Reneka's
flagship in terms of profit and/or volumes of sales. In the end that may have actually
lengthened its production life, but now Reneka is focusing on different things in the
European and Asian markets and indeed Barry, I don't think the US distributor features high
on Reneka's agenda.

I'm sorry to hear that but not particularly surprised. You did a great job
in promoting this machine but a major manufacturer should not have needed
one guy in a far off corner of the world to be out in front of them in
understanding the niche that this machine could fill. There are a few people
who are willing to buy a machine from someone 12,000 miles away without any
local support, but you exclude a large percentage of customers who would not
be comfortable with such an arrangement. The US distrubutor for this machine
had zero interest in filling the consumer niche and none of the major US
online espresso machine vendors ever picked it up. So it was essentially an
orphan. Also, as other pointed out, when this machine came out it was way
ahead of the market, but now there are other dual boiler alternatives in its
category. I assume it was not a great seller on the commercial side either
or they would not have discontinued it - I suppose that low volume
installations (the kind that would need a Techno) are increasingly going
over to superautos - that's what I see in the US at least and it makes sense
in that a low volume location is unlikely to have a staff that is properly
trained in the us of a traditional machine.

Pity. Since it came out I have had at the back of my mind that one
day, when my giotto goes to the coffee store in the loft (which it
shows no sign of doing yet), I would upgrade to one of those.

But i guess too many people thought that like and hence it's demise.

Well Ken if the Giotto dies in the next month or so, I'll do you a good deal on a Techno
still. I don't know what a new Giotto retails for in the UK nowadays, but I would be keen to
beat that price, just for the fun of getting these last few Technos out to as many alties as
possible. Like in the good ol' days when I was most of the time contacted by people who I
already knew from alt.coffee.

Very sorry to hear about the Techno's demise. But if it means that you'll be
posting here more, well at least there will be a benefit.

the reality was their distribution setup in the US was poor.

No, Marshall, this is what you should write:

"That wasn't it at all. I could tell you what it was, but I'm not at
liberty to tell you."

or:

"That wasn't it at all. I could tell you what it was, but then I'd have to
kill you."

Actually, they shot Renault's CEO. But, I think it was for reasons
other than a lousy U.S. distribution network.

They didn't shoot him for that reason, but I can't tell you why:-)

Sad to see it go.

This frenchman, in New Zealand, providing better service over the
internet than I could have had in person down the road.

Always a pleasure.
