Subject: Replacing Mazzer Robur Burrs

Ok, so I'm just about to go ahead and replace the burrs on my Mazzer
Robur and I thought I'd just quickly ask around to see if there's
anything I should keep in mind/ be careful of when doing this. It looks
fairly straight forward and I've removed the top burr before to clean
down the internals but this is my first time actually replacing a whole
burr set. Is there anywhere that has a step, by step walkthrough,
possibly with photos?

As background, the Robur is actually almost new but I have a suspicion
that the burrs are one of the infamous bad quality check ones that were
coming out of Mazzer over the past couple of years. So, I bought a new
set of burrs ($240 AU), I'll keep the old ones and see if it makes any
difference to the abysmal shots its producing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben

Lucky you, being able to resource new burrs.
I've been asking around if it's possible to buy replacement burrs for
my Solis (the Starbucks Barista variety) and here in Aus it seems
downright impossible to source them anywhere.

Not so lucky as I had to bring them in from Italy costing me around
$240.

I'll ask around for you in terms of finding some replacement burrs.

Cheers,
Ben

Solis burrs are EASY, mostly because so many people use them. Diamond C
http://www.diamond-c.com.au/ are the official Solis agent,
http://www.delonghi.com.au/ should be able to help, even Sunbeam use them in
the EM8910 http://www.sunbeam.com.au/ and if all those cop out there's
always Bodum, www.bodum.com.au .

Ben you must push the place where you purchased the grinder from.
Crikey my customers spit the dummy if their group gaskets >3 months old
and demand replacements under warranty even if they are still as soft
and rubbery as the day they were made. If you think the burrs are
defective then complain - the only way the factory will know if
anything is suspect is if the local agent reports it to them. Don't
worry about seeming like a pain in the rear, it's invaluable feedback
for the manufacturer as well. It's an expensive professional machine
so you are entitled to get some help.

FWIW I've never come accross any poorly made Mazzer burrs both OEM and
no OEM.

Good luck.

Paul

I'm going to save this and use it at the first opportune moment, Paul.
Like...

"Your Honor, I attempted to complete the sanity at the time of the
alleged offense evaluation, but after reviewing the limits of
confidentiality with the defendant he spit the dummy and refused to
comply with the Court's order."

I like it. A lot. Thanks!

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the support. I completely agree with what you're saying
about the faulty burrs and contacting the supplier except that I'm not
entirely sure what the problem is. I've posted both on here and CG and
the general consensus seems to be to just replace the burrs. So I've
got a new pair but I'll certainly keep the old one and hopefully I can
get them under a magnifying glass (and photos) to see if the cutting
edge is clean.

Basically, using the same technique that I use regularly on a Mazzer
Major and I've used on various other grinders, I prepared my pf, locked
it in and started my shot. Constantly, the shot would start out fine
with a nice speed of pour and after around 15ml from either side, it
would seem to clam up and resort to just dripping. I tried dosing less,
I tried older beans, I tried fresher beans, I tried different tampers,
I messed around with the pucks but couldn't pick out exactly what was
happening. So, I've bought myself a new set of burrs and hopefully I
should get the result I'm looking for. If so, I know that it's the
burrs and I'll seek replacements for the bad quality ones.

Hope that explains the situation a bit.

Cheers,
Ben
