Kind of slow in here - how about temporarily (for rest of 2006) rescinding BOP?

Well, sure, assuming you mean AFU. I'm not familiar with APU. I don't know the whole history of AFU and haven't spent much time there other than a few periods of lurking, but it maintains a Ban on Politics and a Ban on Religion (BoP and BoR) in an attempt, I gather, to keep the conversation focused. Inasmuch as afca maintains no such restrictions but there is a considerable overlap in membership between the two groups, and given that afcans have shown some interest in whether AFU will survive given the recent slow-down in traffic, I thought afcans might want to follow this AFU debate, if indeed the OP generates some discussion. bill

That's funny. > > I always thought it was to keep the number of flame wars down. > > I think the BOMP and BOR had similar reasons. Um, no. You'd be mistaken in that. The BoR, and the closely related BoP, are intended to insulate AFU from shrill, long winded, onanistic, spittle -flecked and ultimately futile debates suspended by force of will in unprovable belief and unencumbered by documentable fact. There are places -- perhaps far too many of them -- in Usenet for that kind of thing, but we don't do it in AFU. Simon's irregularly posted, but easily found, AFU Style Guide has a very informative paragraph on the subject, one that has obviously gone unread by far too many eyes for far too long: [quote]---------------------------------------------------------- Certain types of post are banned from AFU. The test is this: do arguments about the subject often cause people to change their minds ? If not, then don't post argument on that topic to AFU. This covers a lot of ground including, but not limited to, religion, politics, abortion and gun-control. Feel free to post ULs about these subjects to AFU (complete with source and analysis, of course) but please don't argue the validity of the points of view involved or assert that one side is right or wrong. Since argument about religion and politics rarely convinces people to convert from one religion to another or from one political view to another, this constitutes a ban on attacking or supporting the tenets of any religion or political theory on AFU. [unquote]-------------------------------------------------------- By way of example, one's position that the universe was created in a medium oven by a cosmic muffin, dammit, and that the other is wrong, wrong wrongity-wrong in their sad belief in a hairy thunderer, each backed by extensive, selective, quotes from either the Good Cookbook or the Sacred Weather Scrolls will win no converts to either side. More to the point, the argument lacks UL content and hence /doesn't fuckin' belong in AFU/. > Well, the BOMP was probably because of the joke cascades, followed by > the posts berating people for watching that stupid show and repeated the > senseless wit - which started a flame war. Furrfu. From the same source: [quote]----------------------------------------------------------- We've all seen the Python stuff too often. Not only don't we need to see it retold, but "Most people here can see a joke at 10 postings. No need to remind them what humor is." -- George Cayro If, in a thread about weights or coconuts you see a reference to a Swallow, that's enough to let us get the joke: we don't need it expanded. [unquote]--------------------------------------------------------- It wasn't about "the stupid show", it was about writing well and writing as if you bloody well understood that your audience at least a lonely dram of wit slithering around the brain pan someplace. Making a cleverly amusing and well disguised reference, for a particularly difficult example, to the tactical military use of a dog with no nose, requires a certain effort on the writer's part. Likewise, it requires some cognitive effort, as well as a certain minimum fund of cultural literacy on the part of the reader, to get the embedded joke. What AFU strongly objected to was being force-fed as if it was some drooling TV sit com audience. <URL:http://groups.google.com/group/alt.folklore.urban/msg/7964ce3b2ef6f871?hl=en& > [quote]-------------------------------------------------------------- That "bird flu" stuff could be real. Psittacosis, if I remember how to spled it. It's a nasty respiratory infection spread by parrots. Maybe other birds spread it too. Persons following up with Monty Python jokes will have their hands nailed to the keyboard. [unquote]------------------------------------------------------------ The idea is to induce the reader to spit coffee at their monitor in surprise, not to induce a yawn and a forceful striking of the "Next" key. Another example: <URL:http://groups.google.com/group/alt.folklore.urban/msg/8607e58703e4b0e6?hl=en& > > Threads in AFU don't stay much more focused than do those in AFCA. Threads, focused? No, but then neither do conversations in real life. But there is a social contract in each group that sets boundaries and promotes certain behaviours. As always, those that object to the "herd" are welcome to follow the time-honored tradition of electronic conversation fora and start their own group with their own rules. -- "I defer to your plainly more vivid memories of topless women with whips....r" R. Of course, I do not object to a lack of focus. Some of the most interesting discussions occur when threads wander. Besides, forcing folks to remain focused would tend to inhibit free disucssion of the topic at hand. I've always enjoyed reading, and sometimes posting to, AFU. I see no need to change the group. A bit more traffic would be nice, *but* not if the cost is a change in the culture of AFU. People have died or just wandered away and the culture has drifted a bit, but that's normal for any cultural group. -- Mike Drop my surname to e-mail me

The reference to which has been a common cultural moray in AFU since my long ago arrival there, more than 10 years ago now. > In AFU "Nicey-nice month" would be the one after September. "Stupid show" indeed. Misunderstanding alert. I don't think MPFC was stupid. I like most of the episodes, although some of the humor fell flat. There are, however, people who think it was a stupid show. Hey, I watched "Kung Pow" last night. Compared to that, MPFC was rocket science. (I enjoyed KP, too. Stupid is good if you do it right) BTW, anyone else notice that "Hogfather" is coming to TV as a series? Mike

Mudslinging and partial truisms are still about, and general sniping and baiting abound, although, thankfully, not so much here in afu. Translation: Say, the drinking water reservoir is getting low, let's pump raw sewage into it to top it off. And here come the judge's scores... Ah, 6.5 for brevity, that's respectable: The usual form is to get in, do the damage and get out. 8.3 for knowledge of the groups, a respectable score for trolling two groups that Maddy frequented. 5.4 in the bait selection category, the judges obviously felt that the bait was too bland there. 3.7 for grammar, the troll bobbled a bit at the top of the routine. A very disappointing 2.0 for originality, that's going to hurt his chances at making the troll finals. Oh, an a 10.0 for taste. Since the troll "taste" scores are inverted, this will count very heavily against him indeed.
