I haven't seen much written about these events recently, and I'm
curious about who will be attending either or both...

Well, I'll be attending both. I'm pretty sure Jim Schulman is coming.
Otherwise, he's just conning me to get a free room to stay in in L.A.
I'll let the others speak for themselves.

I think it is just Jim and Marshall. I heard they decided that there was no
need for the conference room so they're just going to use Mike Ferguson's
office.

I don't think that you were wrong, Marshall... you will probably be
accommodating many more out of towners than you will be creating a
problem for in-towners like myself. If I wasn't going to inconvenience
my wife I wouldn't have thought twice about attending both in one
weekend. Both of these events are great opportunities for us coffee
lovers, and you of all people have nothing to feel bad about, Marshall.
And maybe I can arrange something along the lines that Ken suggested,
I'm still trying to figure out a way to attend both.

I've spoken with Jeff and Jody within the last week and they have
15-20 rsvp'd folks from the group, and they are pleased with that
number. I'd love to be there as well but I can't. Sounds like a good
time...al

Another option would be to try to arrange childcare for a few hours on
Sunday and bring your wife to SB.

Well, I know that I will be at attending at least the Supreme Bean
event, and I am debating whether or not I can justify leaving my wife
in sole charge of our 2 1/2 year old daughter for both days of the
weekend... I don't think that I can. I attended last year's cMember
event and enjoyed it very much, but I think that I must make a choice.
I wish that both events were not scheduled for the same weekend, but I
know that this arrangement is beneficial for people coming in from out
of town. I'm actually hoping that many or most people will attend both,
because I'd like to have a chance to meet some of the people who's
posts I've read here on alt.coffee. And yes, I know that your comment
was in jest, Ken.

The SB thing is only 3 hours long, and if you skipped the lunch at the end
you could shorten it further. You could also look at the schedule of events
for Saturday and see if there was a block of them that really interested you
and just go to those. Voila! You've only got two half days of events and
no longer should you feel guilty . . . . . .

Agreed, but I have so much to learn about different kinds of beans,
different profiles for roasting them, how they taste after various
periods of time, how grind and steeping time and who knows how many
other variables affect the outcome... and I'll now be able to play with
temperatures on my Silvia... like I said, I'm set for a long while. I
think that the coffee thing that we're all into is for the most part a
very reasonably priced obsession, and I agree that a $4500 goal is not
outrageous for some people--it depends on one's means and how far along
the path a given person might be.

I don't have even a dime budgeted for a new machine so I'd be happy to
skip that talk. I did just buy the PID kit from Jim Gallt, however, and
hopefully I'll have that up and running by the time that I attend one
or both of the meetings next month. I'm the only coffee drinker in the
house and I never have more than one double or triple at a time, so
that'll do me. I also like coffee from my french press and Aeropress
depending on my mood, so I will go for a day or two sans Silvia.

Hi John, there was a 2 line Watlow Series 965A for sale on ebay there.,
I guess that was you that bought it. {:-) I bought 2 kits, a one line
935A & a 2 line Watlow Series 965A. I installed the 2 liner on Sun the
25th.

You're gonna LOVE the kit, what a total breeze! & the shots are simply
amazing!!

This is of course a very reasonable suggestion, but due to a number of
reasons we don't have easy access to childcare and Sundays are the
hardest day for us. I'm still looking into options, however, including
checking out the schedule when it is posted to see if I can attend just
part of the day.

I'm a former high-end stereo guy, too. I worked at Jonas Miller's here
in LA, and I still have some cool old stuff like a Cotter front end and
a Michaelson and Austin TVA-10 tube amp.

That's what I'm gathering, I'm not too worried. Also, one of my best
friend's dads is a co-inventor of the transistor, and he or his dad
could probably help me out in a pinch!

I'm pretty handy with tools and comfortable with 'lectricity. Nothing
like the engineers here, I quickly acknowledge, but a lot of years
dinking around with high-end stereo and amateur radio. So the daunt
factor was probably pretty low for me.

But...If you look at Jim's pictures and follow his instructions step by

Thanks for these posts, I had just glanced at the 40-page instructions
and it looked a bit daunting. Hopefully one of my neighbors will lend
me their dawg if I get stuck...

And thanks again to this group, I only learned about the availability
of this kit through a recent post. Being forced to install it myself
should help me in the event that I ever need to fix it, too.

And as far as the expertise thing goes, that's one of the main reasons
that I look forward to occasions like the cMember and Supreme Bean
events... since I'm the only person that I know that makes good coffee,
I have few reference points from which to judge my results. Being able
to try a variety of top quality coffees that have been roasted by an
expert, rested the correct amount of time, and prepared the way they
were meant to be prepared is exactly what I need at this stage in my
coffee making development, so thanks in advance to the people at
Supreme Bean for providing this opportunity.

John, it just LOOKS daunting because Jim in effect talks you through
every step of the way, & shows you with fully illistrated pics.

I'm with Craig. You'll be thrilled with the kit. The instructions are
so clear that I let my dawg do the actual installation and I just
watched over her shoulder.

I'm by no means at the level of expertise of lotsa people here so I
need all the help I can get. And I can tell you that my percentage of
sink shots has gone way down since I gave Miss Silvie a case of PID.
