Subject: Scale recommendation

Hi folks -
I am in need of a new digital scale. Did a little research on the Net
and found tons of choices. Tom has the Salter brand, and WLL has the
Escali - actually quite cheap at twenty-five bucks which includes
shipping. Of course lesser in cost can equal lesser in quality.
Anyone care to help me make my decision?

The Nexxtech mini scale has been sold for anywhere from $9 to $25 on
the Net. I bought two (one for the office), when Randy G (I think)
spotted them last year for around $10. I'm very happy with it.

Used the Escali daily for 9 months -no problemd. Very functional - hit
the button to adjusts for tare and you're ready to go. Easily adjusts
between metric and US customary. Very consistent. Haven't tested for
accuracy as repeatability is what I am really after. Seems like a very
good value (especially since mine came free with my Brewtus).

I've been using the same Salter for about eight years. I think they're all
basically commodities these days, and all make batteries last at least a year.
The key factor for me would be to contemplate what you will most often weigh,
and what you will weigh it in, and then choose a model which will allow you
access to the buttons and a view of the display without contorting yourself.
They vary quite widely in where they place the buttons and display.

I have a Tanita scale for many years. It is very good indeed, but as I
have seen, it costs now about $70.00.

Salter relegated to weighing sugar for hummingbird syrup where a few
grams in a kilo won't make any difference.
Neither are bulletproof so if you're a klutz... I handle mine like I
do my calipers, micrometers, etc. It's a tool, not a toy, ;-) as me
grandfather used to caution me.

Perhaps others are less ham-fisted than I but my experience with the
really inexpensive scales such as the Salter or Escali is that they are
fragile and easily broken unless handled with some delicacy.
My suggestion would be an Ohaus CS200, max load 200g, readability 0.1g,
cost $65.00. Well built, excellent warranty and service, if required.

Knowing what you are going to use it for would help. If air roasting
then resolution to one gram would be sufficient. Same for drum, but
capacity may be a factor. If for dosing then .1 gram resolution would
be more desirable. As Marshall mentioned, I have been using a $25
digital I picked up on eBay a number of years ago and it still works
fine. It is a digital electronic precision instrument, and I handle it
that way. It is on it's third battery and still works just fine.
Plenty accurate for roasting. Unfortunately, the ones similar to it
on eBay are selling cheap with a very rude shipping charge.
