Subject: Seal on Gaggia Carezza

Can anyone advise please?

I've had my two Careeza units (one at home and one at work) for a
couple of years now and been very happy. However, I'm now starting to
get quite a bit of leakage around the portafilter on one of them. I've
removed the filter and filter head and given them, and the seal, a damn
good clean and but I'm still getting leakage. The FAQ suggests it might
be the head seal is worn so I've now got a replacement. Too my surprise
it's a very thick (over 1/4" thick) gasket.

Please, can anyone advise:

1. Is it likely to be the seal?
2. How do you get the old one out and the new one in?

In excited antisipation.... :-)

Steve

Quick question: its the leaking coming from around the portafilter, or is
it leaking through the grouphead? I know you said the former, and it's
likely the group gasket, but it's worth checking, since the pea valve on the
Gaggias tend to cause leaking in scaled units after a while.

In any case, a full set of instructions (for both actually) including
pictures and resources, can be found at:

Followed the instructions at the link and it went without a hitch
(well, apart from trying to find a short screwdriver). The old rubber
gasket wasn't a rubber gasket any more: It had turned to carbon! New
gasket was an easy push fit.

Only problem now is the new gasket is so thick I have to really strain
to get the portafilter onto the head.... hopefully that will get easier
with time as it wears in. Anyway it doesn't leak now. :-)

Thanks

Steve

I've seen 15 YO machines in daily use with the original group gasket. Since
heat is their #1 enemy I wonder if your thermostats are working correctly?

As far as the kind of fit you describe the incorrect group gasket could be
the culprit. Techs that can't lay their hands on an 8MM gasket might have
"upgraded" you to an 8.5MM or even a 9MM. It's been known to happen.

:(

For what it's worth, I won WLL's "Big Idea Contest" last year, and my idea
was to put up maintenance pages with pictures and parts. I told them that
even on alt.coffee and coffeegeek, there's a real difficulty in describing
maintenance with pictures and part ordering descriptions.

Yeah, it can be a bummer when the portafilter doesn't go perfectly 6
o'clock.

I had a professional, commercial ECM service dept (must be one of the only
ones in the country) change the gasket (along with other things) in my
Giotto, and they must have fitted it without a basket in the portafiler,
because without the basket, it gets tight at 6 o'clock, but with the basket,
it gets tight at about 7:30. Been that way for two years. I just got used
to it.

I think it's around the filter. What I see is water dripping from the
underside of the head. Seems to be coming from the inside part where
the portafilter seals to the head.

I'll check the resource. Thanks very much.

Yes.... on both the home and work machines I could only get the
portafilter on as far as about 7 O'Clock - it fits but it's a bit of a
heave...

The worse condition old gasket was the work unit but, TBH, it's often
left on accidently over night etc so it gets quite hot sat there doing
nothing. I'm not sure of the age of the machine since it came off ebay
- it might be quite a lot older than the couple of years I've had it.

I've had quite a few espressos over the weekend on the home machine and
it's now becoming acceptable stiff (oooh). If the work machine goes the
same way then I'll be happy.

Yes... I did notice that the new gaskets were a tadge thicker than the
old ones.

The only place I can find in the UK that seems to do spares is Happy
Donkey and they only have the one gasket :-(
