I recently contacted wholelattelove.com technical support about a leak.
This was their response:

The machine should let approx. 1oz of water into the drip tray every
time the brew button is turned off. This is normal and expected. That
means the 3 way solenoid is doing its job of releiving excess pressure
at the portafilter, and redirecting it. The valve should not leak
while brewing, however.

This sounds a little weird, but I guess it could be normal. Does anyone
have an opinion on the validity of this response?

Thanks from a newbie barista,
Byron

Yes. It's perfectly normal. I haven't measured the volume but an oz or
so seems just about right.

think of it this way; at the end of the shot, there was high pressure coming
in from the pump. If there was no valve the system would remain somewhat
pressurized and when you remove the PF you would get a spray of hot water
and coffee in the surrounding area and on you. If you waited awhile after
pulling the shot and before removing the PF, the pressure would presumably
dissipate, but the mfr. has no way of knowing how long you are going to wait
before removing the PF for cleaning and or preparing another shot.

This is in essence a safety mechanism.

You need to tell us about the nature of the "leak" in detail

What they told you is accurate as it is a function of the 3-way valve.
I HIGHLY suggest you go to my website. In the right-hand column there
is a "lesson" on the function of the 3-way valve and how it works that
_MIGHT_ explain the "leak" in terms of their answer.

What they were talking about IS normal, but until you describe more
fully the nature of what you suspect is a leak we can't help other
than make guesses. I am glad to help, but am not so good at the whole
mind-reading thing.

Leakage

it should not be called a "leak" but rather a discharge of the
un-needed water to relieve the pressure after pump shutdown.
