Is the chief advantage of the Rancilio Silvia over the SS Gaggia Classic its
steaming ability because of the larger boiler? Are there any other
features that make one superior to the other?

Gaggia has about 50% more power.
Silvia's steam advantage only lasts as long as
you're drawing down the stored steam. Once that's
gone, steaming advantage goes to the Gaggia.

For certain values of 'advantage' - Silvia seems to have more than
enough steam for most people to do all they want, and more than more
than enough doesn't seem to be a feature worth anything.
Also, if you plan to PID, you'll possibly get better stability from
Silvia - evn Silvia on standby is on a lower duty cycle than some PID
manufacturers recommend. Has anyone PIDd the gaggia? What is its
power consumption at rest?

That's why it's best to start steaming just before the light goes out
(steam stat clicking off). That way you're maximizing Silvia's steaming
power by keeping the heating element energized throughout the entire
steaming phase.

solenoid valve that dumps excess pressure when the pump is cut off.

Mine *is a Classic, has a pipe, but the pipe doesn't interfere with
removing the drip tray. It does, however, have to be removed to take out
the water container.

My Gaggia Classic also has no pipe or tube that has to be removed in order to
remove the drip tray.

It is a Classic and it does have a three way valve with a pipe that goes to
the drip tray and you do not have to remove it to empty the drip tray. Not
for the last seven years anyway. Perhaps it will grow overnight so that you
will appear to know what you are talking about.

boiler

And the silvia is not a better steamer really.

On my Gaggia, the boiler light comes ON when it is up to heat. On the
Rancilio Sienna I had before, the boiler light went OFF when it was up to
heat. Does the Silvia operate the same way [OFF=heat ready]?

I just pull the tray straight out with the deck in
place. There's about 1/16" clearance between the tube
and the deck.

On my Gaggia Classic I have to remove the tube before the drip tray
can be removed.

That was just a guesstimate. After scrutiny, I
find closer to 1/8" clearance.

I would check to see that your tube is seated all
the way up. Pull it out, and ram it up with a firm
push and notice whether it seats solidly. If not,
there could be crud up there keeping it from going
all the way up.
If it does seat solidly, and the tube still extends
into the deck, then it's a simple matter for the bench
grinder.

I may consider that option to cut off the tip of the tube. But I
periodicy remove the tube anyway to remove the water tank to give it a
clean. So, maybe not....

I seem to remember that alan frew did a definitive comparative and concluded
that the taste was better with the slivia and surmised it was becuase of the
shower screen. Couldn't find the article on his site though - but he does
still rate the silvia as having a better build:
