Subject: Solis Maetro Plus adjustment rings

So I finally roasted some beans for espresso last night(been kinda
lazy lately) And was adjusting the grind on Maestro Plus when the tabs
broke of the adjustment ring(guess I shoulda cleaned it)
I'm have been looking for a new grinder for a couple months
now(either a used mazzer or a new rocky) but don't have the money to
buy quite yet.
Luckily after searching the web for parts, I stumbled upon:
http://www.baratza.com/solis_faq.php
And lo and behold last month they released an upgrade kit for the part
I broke, and even better yet they are giving them away free! Basically
it has thicker tabs and a piece of felt to keep grounds from getting in
there and jamming it up.

So if you have a maestro plus, I would suggest heading over there and
ordering yourself the upgraded part(adjustment ring.)

Yup, I even got an email back from a lady within an hour saying she
would ship it right out, along with a document with pictures asking me
to check a couple other parts to see if I needed them. I am very
impressed with their level of support.

I also took apart the grinder last night, to get it working
temporarily, and wow was it jammed up with coffee grinds inside, they
really needed this upgrade. I spent 2 hours taking it apart and
getting the grinds out of it and now it rotates freely again. I
drilled a couple holes in the ring so I can use a screw driver to
adjust it until i get the new parts.

Email from them:

Hi Brad:
I would be happy to get this out quickly.
Please check you the white burr holder and make sure both the tabs are
will on the holder.

I have the upgrade/repair kit on my desk. For those of us who are
mechanically challenged, a set of directions, or at least a diagram would
have been helpful. Are directions on line and I just missed them?

I think you'll find a link in the FAQ to a Word document containing the
instructions. I found it poking around, and haven't yet ordered the
upgrade, as I'd have to order a replacement hopper also. I'm kind of
holding back, because the instructions aren't illustrated, and I don't
trust my ability to follow them without some pictures.

This is more than knowing how to use a file.

Basic instructions for resizing the cutout on the hopper would state
just how to resize them. Remove material in a counterclockwise
direction? Clockwise? Center it on the current tab?

Sure, it's possible to figure it out, with careful measurement of other
features on the rings. But instructions are given for far more simple
things, such as how to clean the grinder. Why not this?

I sympathize with anyone objecting to the lack of instruction.

Just received mine today; will probably install it when I next take
things completely apart for cleaning.

If you don't know how to use a nail file, then I'm suprised you can
operate the grinder to begin with.
But seriously if you can't use a file to file a bit of plastic
down(which is one of the easiest parts of this) then you should just
look into a buying a new grinder.

Well, I thought by file they meant one of those big rasp things. Nail
files I have, but is the hopper really soft enough that a nail file
would affect it?

And this is why I'm annoyed that there are no illustrations with the
Solis instructions. It's absolutely impossible for a non-tool person
like me to tell whether I can in fact do the replacement (which I'd
consider not because of any dissatisfaction with the grind but because
of the added ring that supposedly prevents grinds from falling where
they shouldn't).

You don't need the replacment hopper, you just need to fil the 2
slots on the bottom of it to accomadate the wider adjustment tabs.
When I get my kit I'll take lot's of pictures of the upgrade process
and post them online. Its not really that hard, but I do agree, some
pictures would be more helpful.

Sure, but that presumes that I (a) have a file and (b) know how to use
it or (c) can learn how to use it and (d) can manage to file the hopper
appropriately without breaking it. Given the likeliness of (d), that
would require that I buy a new hopper in any case, I might as well save
the expense of a file and the aggravation of attempting unsuccessfully
to use it, and cut right to the new hopper.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered a kit at 1:30 am on the 13th and they
delivered it today, the 15th. That's service.
