Subject: Stupid Philips Senseo controls, what can we do?

Hi all,

I received a Philips Senseo machine from my mother-in-law (they are not all
evil you know).

I love the coffee it makes, but there is one thing about the machine that
really bugs me:

You have to push the on/off button first, then wait for the water to heat
before you can push the cup-of-coffee button. In practice this means that
I'm standing in front of the Senseo with my finger on the cup-of-coffee
button, waiting for the water to boil. This is time I could have spent so
much better! Calling my mother-in-law for example.

Why can't I push the cup-of-coffee button while the water is heating!!????

Does anyone know of a Seseo mod that changes this behaviour?

thanks,

Hekko

It would require the addition of some electronics to store the fact
that you pressed the button, and to then wait whilst the unit reached
operating temperature before carrying out the instruction. I suppose
a simple timer could be built into the vend button to allow a wait,
but this wait would either be used on each operation, or would have to
have a variable timer installed also, so I'd just switch it on, brush
my teeth and then brew coffeee.

toothpaste and coffee, i don't know :)

but yes indeed, there must be someone out there who knows
how to build such electonic circuit?

It should be quite easy..some IC and a capacitor soldered at the right
place..

Well seriously, Hekko, if you want a machine that will make coffee the
instant you hit the button, you have to buy (or persuade your mother in
law to buy) a machine that is designed to do that.

Hi Hekko,

I do not have one of these but know that all of them other than
the Aluminum bodied model, are made of plastic. The companies cannot
risk these machines being on all of the time as the plastic is a major
fire hazard should they overheat or run dry. The fiest model of the Mr.
Coffee was a fire hazard in that it did not have an automatic cutoff
switch in it. Someone's house burned down due to it resulting in a
lawsuit against the manufacturers. These safety features are a good
thing for the public for when they forget to turn off the machines at
home. This is assuming that you want your home there when you get home
from work :-)
The heating elements will also last longer if they are not running
all of the time. Another option for you would be to put hot water in the
receptical thus reducing the heating time needed to reach the boiling
point. If you are making your own pods with fresh coffee, then that
coffee will be better and worth the wait. Though I understand they brew
at too low a temperture for proper extraction. I wonder if the aluminum
bodied models operate at a higher brewing tempreture?

Actually I don't mind that the machine takes a while to heat up before it
can brew the coffee, but the fact that you have to wait untill the water is
boiled before you can instruct it to brew a cup is a design flaw if you ask
me.

I would be much better if you could turn on the machine and immediately push
'single cup' button. The the machine could start boiling the water, and once
it has done that brew the coffee (and maybe have some audio signal to
indicate that it's done).

No Hekko, it is not a flaw in the design. The designers know the
best temperture that coffee needs to brew at. So they designed it to not
brew until the water is heated correctly to due the job right.
Have you checked out the other similar coffee makers to find out if
they offer the automatic option you have descibed?

I don't mean to sound as if I'm belittling your intelligence, Hekko,
but why would it surprise you that you have to turn on a machine before
it wil begin to operate?

What you may want, if you insist upon this kind of coffee, is one of
the bigger Keurig coffeemakers that stays on and keeps water hot all
the time.

First, the machine won't brew right away because it has to come to
temperature- something it does really well. Second, they don't want
you walking away from a machine that will pour out scalding hot water
unattended. Some little kid comes along, bumps the machine, tries to
put the cup back, and it par-boils the linoleum lizard, and you turn
around and sue McDonalds.. Something like that.

Yes I see what you're saying..hadn't thought of that.

Hekko, I forgot to say your point was quite reasonable. I'd thought the
same thing. Until Randy made his point I'd just let the annoyance
subside to a dull roar when I used the darned thing, now I think I
understand why they did it... actually a reasonable design choice I
didn't suss out for myself...

An analogue is the unlock button on a Zojirushi Electric Dispensing Pot.
See:

"As a safety feature, you must depress "unlock" before "dispense" so no
one will inadvertently release a stream of hot water."

I've had TWO great mothers-in-law!

BUT, the Senseo is not really the best way to make coffee -- any
coffee.
Sorry.
(I'm sure she did her best)

I'm not a coffee expert, so I believe you right away when you say it's not
the best way to make coffee. However, the Senseo makes quite a decent cup
and it seems to me that Philips has actually introduced a new kind of
coffee...something in between an espresso and a standard cup of coffee. Put
a little grinded cinnamon on the foam and it's actually quite delicious.
