Subject: Synesso double baskets

Has anyone here had any experience with Synesso portafilter baskets on
their home machine? They can be ordered over the phone directly from
Synesso. LM's basket tolerances are terrible, I don't have to tell
anyone that.

Can anyone tell me about:

-basket dimensions: depth, diameter, and capacity compared to a LM
straight-walled ridged double
-wall style: straight walled or curved like a ridgeless double?
-hole style: photo etched or machined? how do the holes differ from the
LM baskets?

Yes, but more people have to (politely) tell La Marzocco and ESI that.
They need to be told to get their manufacturer of the baskets more in
line. The QC is terrible.

well, can't exactly tell you this - I don't have calipers. But they are
straight side wall, curved in the bottom probly 1/6th an inch or so.
Holds probably 1-3 grams less than the LM double, depending on how much
you updose.

See above. Holes in the filter bottom are more towards the edge of the
flat bottom though.

I don't think you can photo etch something beyond a certain thickness.
And this is where Synesso's LATEST baskets (these are something recent)
are very important - the metal is thicker than any other basket I
currently have, and I probably have about 100. It's solid, shows little
or no flex when tamping, no flex when pressure builds up and a shot
pours from a nekked PF.

Also, there's a more detailed pattern to the holes, and they seem
better engineered than any other basket. As an EG - I see differing
hole sizes in LM baskets all the time (hold it up to light and just
eyeball it). Ditto with other baskets. The four Synesso baskets I have
right now? All look very equal.

I'm using them exclusively now for doubles. Still using the LM single
for singles. They aren't perfect (to be frank, an exacting tolerance,
58mm LM double with a slightly wider hole pattern, and thicker metal
would be better, IMO), but the NEW Synesso baskets are probably the
best you can buy... right now.

Thanks a lot for the details, Mark. They sound like just what I'm
looking for.
