About 20 years ago at the White Flint Mall, in Rockville, MD, I ordered a cup of coffee in a place whose name IIRC was "The Perfect Cup". It was fantastic! Black, sweet, and very smooth. I have been trying to duplicate that cup since then without success. If that was a 10 I can only achieve an 8. I have used fresh beans of many types, a burr grinder, and AFAIK every brewing method and filter. Have you had the same experience?

I too have had similar experiences. It seems that everything has to really come together to make "The elusive 'perfect' cup."

Maybe it had chicory in it? That's what's in the Café au lait one used to be able to enjoy in New Orleans, ante eluvies. I've even tried it espresso but the results were less than stellar. Buy green chicory root & roast/toast it in a heavy pan on top of the stove, until it's the color of oak. Add it to coffee in a 1/3 ratio to start & adjust to your taste. Enjoy! Not really. My coffee experience has only improved over time but it takes attention to detail: 1) good green beans (Smithfarms Kona) 2) home roasted to taste (iRoast manually programmed) 3) grind to match espresso machine (Zeis hand) 4) adequate espresso machine (doesn't have to be super-duper) 5) brew into drinking cup Bob Wilson

You are so sweet! You know I was going to post much earlier today after reading the post, that if you begin with excellent beans ---it will probably be a good start. I was drinking some of our own coffee at the time- plain and black and it was sweet and mild and aromatic. Yummy. But I did not post:) and went to town. Oh well we are on vacation for a month so we can't even sell any of those fabulous beans now. It's okay. We are being transported out of our little rainforest coffee world into European cities with wonderful artwork to absorb. Life does not get any better! Oh yeah, it's with a very fond heart that I recall the 60's. Everything tasted fantastic with a load of THC in my system. But thankfully, times have changed & along with 'just saying no', I've developed a taste for the finer things in life. Discriminatingly good taste is a not a bad thing; how else can one maintain ones superiority over the lower classes? These are self defined by their cross-postings! Hey, who put this Maragogipe in my peaberry? Really now, CAFEdePR might be the bomb for all I know but there are not "THE" one and only bomb. Back to the OP.... IMO There are a lot of sensory things going on to make the best cup. I've pondered this one before and decided that even though I can make far better coffee than most places there are a lot of average-good cups I've had else ware that are still my "favorites". Not better but still favored. Perhaps you have actually had many "10" cups at 6am in your kitchen that you did not notice how very good they were........ Just a thought. John F

Here we go again.... It is mind-boggling how so many with so much can spoil the best cup of coffee yet some with so little have for over three generations been able to perfect and continue to today to make the best cup you will ever taste. It has been said over and over that the main ingredient is the most important part of the perfect cup. You can not make a good cup of coffee if you start with beans that you know nothing about. Don't be fooled by labels. You do not know what you are getting in the bag unless you go directly to the farmer and or buy from their exclusive distributor and not from resellers. At CAFEdePR.com you are guaranteed to get a product that is cultivated and elaborated at the farm of origin and guaranteed not to be blended or mixed with lower quality beans from all over the world.
