Subject: The end of an era - Starbucks to buy out Diedrich Coffee retail outlets
|
As reported in today's Orange County Register, Diedrich Coffee will be selling 21 of it's 23 retail outlets to Starbucks Coffee, virtually ending it's existence as an alternative place to get coffee in the Orange County area. 2 stores will remain, one inside a BMW dealership & one kiosk in a hospital. Diedrich plans to focus it's business around what it does best, roasting premium coffees , but for wholesale sales only, such as to restaurants, hotels, & specialty stores. The Borg continues to assimilate..... http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/money/abox/article_1276307.php

To describe Starbucks as did the OP is not to excuse, but to explain. Neither is Diedrich blaming anyone, they are making a positive and sound business decision that you can surely respect. Further, the "problem" is a structural one (again, IMO) that constrains the prospects of small-to mid-sized franchises that provide some variety and quality (Peet's being an exception----let's hope). So I toast with a (true-blue) Americano, your own business acumen and aspirations, and may you continue to find much success with your ebay enterprise. Martin

There are also strong possibilities for a breakfast program featuring hot egg, bacon, and cheese sandwiches. "

More information on why Diedrich sold out to Starbucks can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diedrichforum/ Starbucks did not approach Diedrich, but rather Diedrich approached Starbucks. I do not blame Starbucks. I blame gross minagement on Diedrich's part for this train wreck. That is my opinion, but I welcome other opinions!

None of these investors seems to make the connection between loss of quality and loss of sales. They prefer to make fun of Martin for caring about coffee quality. It sounds like investors and management were well-aligned in their race to the bottom. Marshall

The two Taco Bell "wunderkinds" who took over the company really didn't know a thing about coffee. And it showed.

I dunno about Martin but one of the guys on the D group who appears to be the most prolific poster is the numbskull who says that he buys his coffee from Mickey D's and cannot tell if it has been on the warmer for 30 seconds or 30 minutes. Also that chefs are the biggest problem with restaurants. With investors like that, how can you go wrong????? Will
