U. Zoka is a 20 minute+ walk down the hill past University Village mall. http://www.trabantchailounge.com/

There used to be a small coffee shop on one of the back-allies facing the Ave. Former beatnik, hipster, Safeco hangout. It's one block from the U. Bookstore on the same alley if I remember correctly. It used to have the best espresso in the district. Zoka is WAY down the hill from main campus & a very steep and aerobic walk back up. Dan, when will you be in UW territory? I will be working at Trabant (website posted below) this Saturday and Sunday until early evening. 45th & University Way just past American Apparel. The beatnik spot mentioned a few posts ago is Cafe Allegro, more or less a Seattle landmark, billing itself as Seattle's oldest espresso bar and having ties with Howard Schultz in the early days. University Zoka is indeed a brief walk form the campus, though well worth the visit. It can be a little hard to find if you dont know where to look for it. And Bronwyn Serna is currently working 3 miles or so away from UW at a new restaurant called Sitka and Spruce. She made me fabulous espresso yesterday! > "D Doll" <d@d.com> wrote in message news:ec2oj2$8o1$1@news.ucalgary.ca... > > > > Trabant is the best choice in the U District (they use Intelligentsia > > beans). Thanks everyone! It turned out that Trabant was too far away to walk to during the symposium breaks, so I never tried it. Went into Cafe Allegro on many occasions, though and had some nice chats with the owner. I congratulated him on 31 years in business. He said, "I never meant it to happen!" He has two stores now, one about 4 blocks south. Between the two is a new Starbucks. He was a little surprised that Starbucks would put a store so close to them, all things considered, but he hasn't seen a drop in sales, so all is well. Fun place, still a hang out, and the espresso was superb. Dan
