My wife makes 1 - 2 cups of decaf a week - usually drip, very
occasionally espresso. Being my wife, she's learned the value of
fresh, freshly ground coffee.

She's found a decaf she can tolerate (extreme caffeine
sensitivity). It is quite dark and oily. I've found getting it out
of my Nuovo Simonelli MDX a pain - so I bought her:

as a placeholder while I find a decent grinder at a decent price
(given the volume mentioned above).

$30 for a conical burr grinder - it's worth the experiment even if
it turns out to be throw away. We've tried 1 drip (worked well)
and 1 espresso (hopeless, way too course despite claims on the box
that it was supposed to be calibrated for same).

So I want to take it apart and see if I can do something to make
it go finer. The top burr DOES NOT screw out as one would expect.
There are 3 small screws in the bottom which only appear to hold
the cord holder on. Appears to be glued together - oh well, what
should one expect for the price? But if anyone has any experience,
I'd love to hear!

Try the split dose method. Grind on the finest setting, half fill the double
basket and tamp. You may find your tamper jams if there's a taper on the
basket. In which case, use a spice tub or even the plastic scoop supplied
with the machine.
Then fill the basket and remove surplus with a straight edge, then tamp in
the normal way.
You may need to experiment with different tamping forces, but it should do
the trick, although it's no substitute for a decent grinder.
