Where did these 3 years go? Why are the good are taken from us early while
evil torturers die in their beds at 91?
As I think about it today, the thing that I regret the most is that my
daughter didn't really get to connect with Madeleine. What a role model - a
strong independent woman unafraid to speak her mind. An animal lover.
Someone able to connect with people from all walks of life. Maybe the Big
Guy has a plan for us all and this was part of it, but if so I sure don't
know what the hell He was thinking, 'cause we sure could use people like
Madeleine down here, now more than ever.

i, too, have that same regret. the "role model" status was one of the
reasons sprog got the name that she did. and yet, at times i wonder
if there is something in the name, or if it's just that we encourage
(consciously or unconsciously) maddie-the-younger towards
independence and strength. heaven knows she already speaks her mind.
she also likes pink, despite our efforts against the whole "girl =
pink" thing.

Personally, this is the first time I can remember hearing of her. I
went to your tribute page and she seemed like such a wonderful person
and having her pic there, to be able to put a face with her words, was
very nice. I enjoyed her "signatures."
I hope she knew how much she was loved in this NG.

I still remember walking with her through the Baltimore Aquarium and
enjoying her childlike amazement at all the seemingly 'alien-like' undersea
life forms.

A few weeks ago, I was helping my mother with some computer maintenance,
and she rather ruthlessly deleted from her addressbook a friend who had
recently passed away. I still have Madeleine in my addressbook, and
can't imagine the utter finality of deleting that address.

wife cleaned his nose prints off the front widows of our home. He
would always sit with his chin on the sill and watch for "Mr.
Squirrel" who would sit on a branch, twenty feet away, at Beemer's eye
level and torment him. I knew the day Val cleaned the window- she
walked into my office room, holding a bottle of Windex, and tears
streaming were down her face.
M1 and I communicated a few times about our GSDs, speaking of loss,
dreading the inevitable, and sharing the joys of how much better it
was to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. In a later
conversation berated me, in her inimitable style, that the three cats
I rescued certainly were not Maine Coons, regardless of how much they
looked like her cats...

Our first GSD (Beemer) was from the local humane society
Number 2 and 3 (both still with us) were both from GSD rescue
organizations. The first, a white female, was with a family who did
not have the time to properly take care of her (the dog was teaching
them games to get them to interact more often), and the second was
found at about 7 months old, wandering the streets of Yuba City. Odds
are he would not have made it even if someone picked him up. He was
VERY neurotic (tail chasing to the point that the tip was raw). We had
him about two years when he developed epilepsy which is a full time
job... nearly. it was why we bought the used motorhome- so we could
take him with and get away on a weekend trip once in a while. Funny
that we spent more money getting him (adoption fee) than on all our
other pets combined, including my parrot which was $80 in 1971).
There are dogs.. and then there are German Shepherds. if you don't
believe it, I suggest you argue the point with M1... ;-)
And folks, if you are thinking about a pet, please look into a local
adoption agency, whether it be the humane society or a specialized
breed rescue. Too many cats and dogs need a good home.

unsettled that doing that bothers me more than most human fatalities.
Kids excepted. And, I suspect, if the truth were known there are a lot
more tears shed for family pets than family members.

A couple of years ago there was a front page story in the Wall Stree Journal
about how drug companies had come to decide that they could advertise and
hawk expensive medications to pet owners in TV ads. These included meds
such as the high powered and expensive meds that dogs are given for
arthritis in their latter years. Before launching these expensive marketing
programs, the drug companies did a bunch of focus groups and surveys. One
question asked in the surveys was something to the effect of, "My dog
understands me better than members of my own family." Surprisingly, at
least to me, the majority of dog owners answered that question in the
affirmative.
