Subject: Water softener turning water yellow

Hi there all, I recently bought one of these: http://www.siliconweb.ie/softener/ My German's not that great (read: non-existant), but it's clearly a small inline water softener for tank espresso machines at a ridiculously cheap price. All well and good, but it's turning my water yellow. When it arrived I dumped it straight in Silvia's tank and a yellow cloud started to emanate around. So I figured I should pre-soak it in salt water, which I did. It's a little less severe now but it still turns any water it comes into contact with a pale shade of yellow. So now I'm wondering whether this behaviour is a normal feature of these small softeners, and whether the yellow dye - whatever it is, a by-product of the resin in the gadget I guess - might be harmful. Do you think it's OK to use it, or should I steer clear of these cheap ones, buy a proper Rancilio one, and remind myself once again that you get what you pay for? Many thanks for any insight. Bruce

Don't eat yellow snow. Don't drink yellow water.
