I know it doesn't have a storage container for the beans, and it doesn't have a doser, but does it grind just as well as the MDF?

Run away, run away. Not even close to the MDF. Unworthy of the Gaggia name. Worthless for espresso. Dusty for everything else. No, not even close. Don't attempt to grind for espresso with it. It's OK for drip.
