I plan on insulating the boiler on my Isomac Venus this week. I have an order en route of the ceramic fiber insulation that everyone has been using ( http://www.infraredheaters.com/insulati.htm Ceramic Fiber Insulation ) Doing some prep work, I found out that the insulation is essentially like home fiberglass insulation -- it busts into particles and is some pretty nasty stuff. Its fine for hx machines, etc -- but the group on the Venus is right below the boiler -- and there's quite a bit of clearance around the boiler and directly above the drip tray. If the boiler were nowhere near the group, i wouldn't care. But something that sheds right next to a vibe pump and above my coffee.... its a recipe for something bad. In other words, I'm likely not going to use the stuff I bought. It can go in my Expobar fine, but i need to find a non-shedding type of insulation. Can anyone offer some options ? I'm trying to find out exactly what the neoprene-like stuff some boilers is. The only item i could find was the Aramid stuff on mcmaster carr : http://www.mcmaster.com/ctlg/D...Width=1078 Aramid Sheets Aramid + Fiberglass Im open to any ideas.

> I have over 1/2 a sheet if you are interested possibly. whats the size / thickness ? that's the exact material i think i should use. but my boiler is *tiny* -- i need a roughly 10" x 3" strip, and possibly a 3.5" square piece as well. its very likely that we'd both be better off if i just get the cheap one from mcmaster-- and your remaining material goes to someone with a larger boiler. i have an expobar too, but its boiler is tucked away where i don't need to worry about fibers.

I discarded the ceramic idea after reading the material data and a few cautions My PID / Insulation project is here http://www.ielogical.com/coffee/VBMPID.html This is what insulated looks like http://www.ielogical.com/coffee/BoilerInsul.JPG This is what I used http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=87485K66 This is the 'wisdom' http://groups.google.com/group/alt.coffee/browse_thread/thread/4cb908a9e34678a6/7e90dc1098d6c522?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=en#7e90dc1098d6c522 For my $130 I had no smell, easy to work with, no fibres. A bargain as far as I'm concerned I have over 1/2 a sheet if you are interested -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

I would have bought that instead had I seen it. Annoying. I reached out to some silicon manufactuers trying to source some silicon sponge to use on the boiler. I didn't mean the amount of shed is nasty, just the product. If i were to use the ceramic blanket on my Isomac, the blanket would be directly above my cup. I think fiberglass shards are particularly nasty, and do not want even 1 shard a week shedding into my cup -- much less onto my hands.

I have used it, and it isn't my favorite. The blanket does shed a bit, but I think 'nasty' is an exaggerration. What I like and recommend is the ceramic paper (actually more like felt) from the same company. It doesn't shed and is much easier to work with. http://www.infraredheaters.com/550-k.htm Dan
