Subject: gaggia espresso steam

I just picked up an older Gaggia Espresso, perhaps sold through Damark.
The steam wand has an intake hole hear the top. It appears that
the wand is one piece. I understand that the Espresso has probably been
through a few different iterations. My question is:
Can this wand in fact be taken apart? I'm good without any 'enhancers'.
Failing that, any good tips on how to get some decent foam? I get big
bubbles almost immediately no matter how or where I place the pitcher.

It's difficult to assist you with so little info. You're right, the Espresso
has been equipped with three different steam 'enhancers' that I know of. I
use an Espresso myself & ended up tossing the entire steam wand &
fabricating my own from chrome plated copper tubing I picked up at a
plumbing supply house. I removed the steam valve & took everything with me
and they helped me get the parts I needed (they even had a conversion
fitting to convert the English fittings to our standard. It took maybe (at
the most) two hours to put it all back together. One thing I've done since
is purchase a few copper caps to fit on the end of the wand. I drilled one
with an .032 (1/32) bit & had it chromed and then I silver soldered it in
place. I've since opened it up to an .065 (1/16) hole & it produced perfect
steam.
Oh, and to actually answer your original question, just remove the
'enhancer' & you'll get much better results. You'll also have a fairly short
steam wand, which is why I felt the need to mod my machine.

Yes, pull the outer sleeve off.
It may be stuck on with crud.
then, you will have the wand with out the "enhancer"

I looked at the pics you sent me & I've never seen that steam wand before.
Just curious, how many switches does this machine have, one or two & how
tall is it? I ask because there is an Espresso with two switches that I've
never had on my workbench.

It has three switches. On/off; steam; brew. The switches light up
when you throw them. It doesn't appear to be in anyway related to a
thermostat or a "ready" type indicator.
The espresso is equal to what I pull on my classic, so no complaints
there. I'm just trying to figure out this steaming thing.

Just take the outer sleeve off the Gaggia wand and use the nozzle inside,
although it's a but short.
Or, you can get yourself a Saeco panarello wand from WholeLatteLove for 13
bucks. It's much longer and it fits right over the steam pipe without hassle.
Take the outer sleeve off this one too and it works like a champ.

Thanks to all for the advice. However, it seems this wand is all of one
piece. I know it sounds like I'm mmissing something....but if I am, I
need help to see what I'm missing. I have dis-assembled the wand/sleeve
on my Gaggia Classic and on various Saeco machines, but this one seems
to be of one piece. If anyone is willing, I could send a picture of it.

I'd be looking at replacing the steam arm with another - should be
just a screw on part...
