Subject: measuring portafilter and tamper size

I have a Melita Cafe Express. It didn't come with a tamper. I need to get a tamper that fits. The problem is that I don't know if my Melita has a "standard" sized portafilter or not, and I'm not clear how to measure my portafilter so I can buy or order the right size tamper The portafilter measures 2 3/8 inches from outside rim to outside rim, and 2 1/8 inches from inside to inside. (All measurements taken at the top rim.) Is this a standard size for a portafilter? How tightly does a proper sized tamper fit against the portafilter sides? My current tamper measures just 1 31/32 inches wide and is at least 1/4 inch too small. Sweet Marias has tampers in these sizes: 58 millimeters = 2.28346457 inches 55 millimeters = 2.16535433 inches 53 millimeters = 2.08661417 inches 2 1/8 inches = 53.97500 millimeters So does that mean I should get a 55 mm tamper? Or does the basket narrow as it goes down, do I need the 58 mm tamper? I'm going to email Sweet Marias and ask but their website says that they are 2-3 days backed up in answering email and filling orders. You say your pf measures 53.8 mm. A 58 or 55 mm tamper would not fit even in to the top of the pf let alone down far enough to actually tamp the coffee. A 53mm tamper might work nicely IF your basket does not narrow. I don't know about the Melitta basket. Melitta should. I know my basket does narrow by a couple mm from top to bottom. For me a 53 mm tamper works well if I overdose the basket but if I underdose it jams against the side of the basket.

You are absolutely right, I was doing the math backwards there, wasn't I! OK, so I guess I need a 53 mm tamper and while it won't fit to the bottom of the basket I'm assuming it should work fine to tamp when the basket is full of grounds (as it should be).
