of course if you aren't going to actually use the thing to change your
behavior (by turning electrical things off or disposing of them) then I know
a good way to save $25.93 . . . . .

Rats, says coupon code expired.

Ordered one anyway, because I had been interested in getting something
like this since I saw my dad had one.

actually, Randy "tempting a guy to part with some green for something
of extremely marginal utility that probably won't last very long" G.

save money by putting it somewhere it will make more.

Some may appreciate these notices, some certainly don't. If related to
COFFEE, post away. This one is a bit far afield, IMO.

Before hitting send, ask:

- who here gives a damn about $2? $20?

- who here is realistically going to go around their abode, plug in
all their electrical stuff, write it all down, do the math and decide
"I gotta junk the 50"HD TV 'cause it sucks more juice than my roaster,
expresso machine and grinder combined"?

And thanks for the http://www.EspressoMyEspresso.com website. It's a
lot of work and I appreciate your passion.

How about thinking outside the box you're in? You could plug your
Hottop into it to monitor the heater elements' functioning in order to
learn how the machine works....?

Ouch. General suggestions elicit personal retorts. OOPs, forgot, this
is alt.coffee...

can already get a that limited information from the Volt meter on the
Variac. Or get a very good approximation with a $2 VOM plugged into
the wall socket. OR look in the glass window and listen to the fan...

Of course, when I really want to know, I'll hook up a 100kHz multi
channel A/D and get accurate data...

... or fuggeddabowdit and just send Pawlan $2800

I was thinking it might work well on my roaster. I don't know how much
current the thing pulls. Maybe a 20 amp circuit would allow bigger loads?

I already have a 12 gauge cord on it. But when I flip the switch and turn
on the heater, the fan slows. Could I use such a meter to find the
bottleneck?

It's another connection in series with the roaster, so will drop the
available voltage ever so slightly. Use a VOM in parallel to find out
what the voltage is doing. Use an Amp Clamp if you want to know the
current.

> I don't know how much

I think it draws about 7 amps.

> Maybe a 20 amp circuit would allow bigger loads?

ONLY if there is a significant V drop on the circuit. A 20 amp circuit
will still only deliver ~110 if that's what's coming off the pole. A
variac allow you to standardize the element voltage.

What else is on the circuit and is powered when you roast that might
draw significant current? Fridge?

Roughly speaking, ~120 becomes ~117 under load with only a couple of
junctions and 100' of 12ga wire.

Plugging close to the distribitution panel will give you a volt or two
more. A dedicated circuit with no other loads might help.

A friend with a home studio was having problems with some gear. Using
a VOM, it was determined that when the AirCon came on he was barely
getting 108 from the street. DWP replaced the transformer. Problem
solved.

There are power conditioners (voltage regulators) that will correct slight
undervoltage problems:

http://www.superwarehouse.com/APC_Line_R_1200VA/LE1200/p/286058

but if you are getting low voltage at your outlets it's certainly worth
investigating what's going on - whether you have a high resistance
connection somewhere in your wall waiting to catch fire, etc. It's true that
you may lose a few volts on a long run, under load, on days in the summer
when the power co. cuts the voltage a little, etc. and most devices will
tolerate a few volts undervoltage without any problem.

A good friend back in the early 1970's, living alone in a small
apartment had an electrical buill that was about triple of ours. We
told him that there was a problem and to call the electrical company.
They came out, messed around, and suddenly his bill dropped about 80%
or so. Turns out they had the 3-story building's elevator wired into
his meter!
