Subject: shipping roasted beans


I just had an unfortunate occurrence with an order from Ecco Caffe (not
their fault). I put in an order for coffee from the Thursday roast
batch. I specified USPS priority mail, since I live about 100 miles
away and thought for sure it would get to my house Friday or Saturday.
It didn't, which means I'll get it today and my first taste of it will
be tomorrow morning, five days out of the roaster! I see people like
Fortune in New York ordering from Ecco, and lots of people on the West
Coast ordering from Intelly and points east. Is everybody paying for
overnight shipping, at $22+ to ship $12 worth of coffee? What are
people doing out there?

priority mail has a stated delivery of 2-3 days from shipment...
unless you live in the same postal region, i wouldn't suggest a
thursday shipment. usually, we've been getting overnight service
within the local region, and the stated 2-3 days for the rest of the
country.

it does seem a bit long for 'priority'
but you also may have missed the part at
http://www.eccocaffe.com/catalog/shipping.php where they said:
" -Orders received Monday through Wednesday will ship on Friday

-Orders received Thursday through Sunday will ship Tuesday."

So if you ordered Thursday, they may not be shipping till Tuesday.... but
the good news is it may be Monday's roast :-)

David, I can't answer your question per se but here is what I know.
*Within Hawaii*, Priority Mail is supposed to arrive usually within 24
and perhaps on a bad day, 48 hours, and we are way bigger than 100
miles apart. FedEx would charge--about!-$9 max for a pound and that
would be a guaranteed 48 hour delivery. I do not understand a $22
charge for a pound. Maybe we just don't have that option here.

I've had better luck with UPS than the USPS. I'm fortunate that I live
in San Francisco and order from Bluebottle Coffee, bluebottlecoffee.net
and Sweet Marias, both about 10 miles away. It may help to order from
a roaster closer to you, even if they are not your first choice. BTW,
Blue Bottle is my first choice.

USPS priority from Oakland to San Francisco, 10 miles, 2 pounds of
coffee, one week, Monday to the following Monday.

Don't worry about receiving on day 5; beans are not ready for grinder until
then. The "fresh beans" dogmatons are overdoing it. You should finish by
day 14-16 and freeze (once) the 2nd half pound. Gary M Livia/Moka

It rather depends on the roast whether beans are as good in week 2 as
week 1.

*$ are good for years, as most here would never open the bag...

"Packages are delivered in an average of 2-3 days to any destination."

The operative word is AVERAGE. I once had a package, not coffee, take
over two weeks to get from the best to the least coast.

I order exclusively from on line vendors, and I'm used to waiting far longer
than that. When I order -- as a general example-- on a Wednesday for a
Thursday roast, I often find beans then ship on Friday and, with Priority
Mail, I'm lucky to receive by Monday. Since most vendors ship UPS, I lose
the weekend days, so beans roasted Thursday then ship Friday, and 3 day UPS
delivers on Wednesday -- 6 days old when I begin my 2 or 3 pound order, and
I drink a pound a week, hence staleness is assured at some point.

I wouldn't blame the vendor. I accept this as what mail order is all about.
But that's just my opinion.

Just giving you what we do usually /normally. Roast Sunday, send via
FedEx Monday and it gets everywhere on the US mainland on Wednesday.
It amazes me too.

We do not have the UPS option but for example, we charge about $15
for 5 pounds going via the FedEx 2 day route which is still less than
Randy's original post cost.

I love Black Cat from Intelligencia in Chicago, but I had the same
problem as you. The affordable shipping time from Chicago to San
Francisco took too long, even though Intelligencia, like may other
roasters, offers UPS and roasts and ships on the same day.

Bingo! I had indeed missed that. I'm still slightly under-caffeinated
and cranky, but much happier. BTW, Ecco, for some reason, is only doing
USPS at the moment, so the UPS ground option wasn't there.

In my experience, it depends on the beans. The more floral odor
compounds are smaller molecules than the distillates, and are
correspondingly more fugitive. An extreme is Yirgacheffe, whose subtle
floral tea-like constituents are, for me, gone after about three days.
On the other hand, coffees whose dominant characteristic is something
like chocolate or cedar are, as you say, fine for much longer, and
blends with a Monsooned component really aren't ready to drink for four
or five days. As a homeroaster (normally), I like the experience of
seeing how the coffee changes through the whole range of times.

I'm more of the opinion that beans PEAK at 5 days and it's down-hill
from there. I really love Black Cat from Intelligentsia in Chicago.
Fortunately they ship UPS and I'm in the same zone as Chicago and get
my beans 2 days from roast with just "regular ground" shipping.

Yesterday, I got my coffee, which was delicious, and an email from
Steve at Ecco. He was disappointed, and felt that I'd blasted his
business in a public forum. So I wanted to close this thread out by
saying, as I thought I had in my original post, that I have never, nor
do I now, have any negative feelings toward Ecco. I think they do an
outstanding job and produce an extremely high-quality product. This was
the first time I'd ordered from their web site, all previous orders
having been done over the phone. The shipping terms are quite clear
once you've gone to the "Shipping & Returns" page; while I think that
navigating to that information might be clearer (I proposed that it
show up on the page where you're picking the shipping method), that's
really a nit. I just don't want anyone to get a negative impression of
their business based on my post.

So you received coffee roasted Monday next day. Nothing wrong with that.
USPS did well, delivery on the same day sent.
It's a shame that Steve at Ecco doesn't see that this is good publicity.
Most criticism was being levelled at carriers not the roaster.
He really ought to thank you for advertising his business here ;-)

frustration with Ecco and not just USPS.

But would you not deal with Ecco on the basis of that post ro would you seek

You're right that the OP wouldn't put me off dealing with Ecco. Maybe my
"ill written" comment is a bit overwrought. I just think the expectation
that a roaster ship the same day as roasting is a lot to expect, but you're
right that the OP wasn't any kind of attack or anything. It was just that
expectation that bothered me as an undercurrent.
