I'd say they are not identical - one says "Love" and the other doesn't. Isn't it worth paying double to feel the "Love"? Seriously, what happens is that big American/European firm contract with factory in China for X thousand PID controllers/handbags/ whatever. Chinese factory runs off X+Y thousand copies and sells the "extras" out the back door. Since American/European company has fired all its domestic factory workers but has not cut the price, it retails the device for 500% of what they pay the Chinese. This leave plenty of room for Chinese to sell same thing (minus the brand name {sometimes} for "only" 250% kup. It would be short sighted of the manufacturer to 'back door' a product if they wished to continue a business relationship. Sometimes a product is private labelled by several 'retailers' BrandX may be 'ginal' components that failed to meet certain QC criteria. Caveat Emptor.

The manufacturer maintains "plausible deniability" - when the aggrieved customer calls they blame the similar product on counterfeiters (which could very well be also). Or as you say, the "Love" controller is not a "Love" at all but the product of the Chinese manufacturer to begin with and Love is relabeling it with their name. It is possible that the branded ones are of identical design but have higher spec. components - in that case the question is whether it makes any difference in this application - you're running an espresso machine, not a nuclear plant .
